Help Winston students mark International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The goals of Walk to School Day are far reaching: promote physical activity; teach students safe walking skills; reduce traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools; and increase awareness of how walkable our community is and determine where improvements might be made.

Here are suggestions for parents and students to ensure safe passage to and from school:

• Parents should always know their child's route.
• Kids should always report directly to their destination, without any detours.
• Wear bright clothing to be more visible to drivers.
• Walk in a group with other children when possible.
• Never use electronic devices (cell phone, iPod) or other distractions while walking or biking.
• If approached by a stranger, immediately get to safety and contact a trusted adult. If necessary go to a public place and locate an adult who can help by calling the police.
