The WCE PTA Newsletter, the Winston Campus Flyer, is published and distributed to the youngest child in each WCE family via backpack or email each month. This is a major instrument of communication between the PTA, school and home, and one of the best ways to stay informed about what is going on at Winston Campus. Be sure to check for calendar changes and additions each month, as well as information about upcoming events and activities at and after school, news and information from the principals and PTA committees, and parenting education information.

A chilly "Welcome" from old man winter interrupted our unseasonably warm winter so far. Winston Campus Elementary PTA makes every effort during the cold month of February to keep everyone involved and excited about our great programs. The Sock Hop was a huge success. Thanks to Julie Sciuckas and all the volunteers for putting together another fun evening of great music, refreshments and community.
One of our most anticipated programs, After School Specials, will take place after school on the following Fridays: February 3, 10, 17, & 24. Please carefully note all of the policy and dismissal procedures if your child is taking part in this program. A huge THANK YOU to Venessa Nickel & Mary Catherine Ritterbusch for all your planning for this exciting event.
The classroom Valentine's Day parties will also take place in February. Offer thanks to any room parent that you know who has risen to the challenge of coordinating your child's party.
Rounding out the month is another awesome family activity. Our annual Orbit Roller Skating Party will take place on February 22nd from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Orbit Roller Rink. It is free to all PTA members, so if you haven't joined, see the head table at the rink and become part of a remarkable group of caring, sharing people. Thank you, Kathy Schneider, for organizing this popular event.
As you know, the PTA has a lot of wonderful events that all students can enjoy. Wow, did you see all the non-cost events planned for February? The PTA can only exist with the help of all our fantastic volunteers. We need volunteers for the Nomination Committee to nominate individuals for the role of President, Vice-President, Secretary & Treasurer for the 2012-2013 school year. This is a great way to meet other parents & have a voice in how the PTA is structured for next school year. Deb Gabriel has volunteered to serve as chair of this committee. If you would like to serve on this critical committee, please contact Deb at

Dear Winston Campus Elementary Families,
Winter finally arrived! I don't know about you, but I was enjoying the 40 degree days. Over the holidays, Santa brought my boys a new sled. They have been so disappointed this winter. We have only gone to the sledding hill once. Something is telling me that we are in for a snowy February. I should knock on wood right now because I just jinxed us!
The students are buzzing about After School Specials. Every Friday in February, our amazing PTA plans and organizes fun activities for our students. After School Specials is a highlight for many of our students. Our students participate in a variety of fun activities such as cake decorating, face painting, arts and crafts, karate lessons, cooking, paper airplane making, various sports and many more. I want to again thank our PTA for organizing this amazing event. Organizing an event such as this is a huge undertaking and I greatly appreciate all your hard work.
On Thursday, February 2, from 6:30 to 8:00pm, I would like to invite all Winston Elementary parents to a parent education night sponsored by the WCE Technology Team. We are hosting an instructional technology event to share with our parents all the innovative ways we use technology to improve the daily instruction we provide. From 6:30 to 7:00, Jim Garwood (Deputy Superintendent) and Nadine Norris (District 15 Instructional Technology Facilitator) will be sharing with parents current instructional technology that is in place across the District and how this technology is improving the instruction we provide. They will also be sharing some of the future plans regarding instructional technology. From 7:00 to 8:00, Winston Campus Elementary teachers will be hosting sessions to share some of the specific instructional technology that is currently used at WCE. You will have an opportunity to use classroom technology and understand the impact it has on our students. Nadine will also be hosting a session on how instructional technology can be used at home. She will share with parents how to keep technology safe as well as pass along many free resources and websites that can be used at home to increase academic achievement. I hope to see you on February 2.
In early March, all students in grades 3 - 6 will take the Illinois Standards Achievement Test. Our teachers have been preparing our students for these exams all year. These tests measure how well our students have ascertained the state learning standards. Our teachers do take these tests very seriously because it is a direct reflection of their instruction. We use a variety of assessments throughout the year to help monitor the progress of our students.
* Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT)
Grades 3 - 6 - March 5 through March 16
- Grades 3 - 6 - Reading and Math
- Grade 4 - Science
* Illinois Alternate Assessment or IAA (AIME Only)
February 22 through March 18
February is a very busy month! Not only do we have After School Specials every Friday in February, we also have our Valentine's Day parties on Tuesday, February 14 from 1:15 to 2:00. The 6th grade boys will be competing in the District's 2-Ball competition on Wednesday, February 8 and the 6th grade girls will be competing on Thursday, February 9. The 2-Ball competition is held at the Palatine Community Center. District 15 holds Kindergarten/Open registration on Wednesday, February 15. If you have any neighbors with kindergarten aged students, please remind them to register. Lastly, our PTA roller skating party will be on Wednesday, February 22 at Orbit Skating Rink. This is always a huge hit with our students.
This month we will have countless volunteer hours from many of our parents and I want to say thank you! We couldn't do it without you. As always, I am available to discuss any questions or concerns you may have by phone at 847-963-7505, or by email at
